Dog Training Technology - 105
10 CEUs
This course provides both hands-on and academic elements with an emphasis on hands-on exercises.
This course does not explore specific sports but provides information on training skills, techniques and strategies, concentrating on animal friendly approaches (being creative and avoiding aversive stimulation). Students can expect to do some studying and writing in this course but also to do actual dog training (with your own dog or that of a friend).
You will require access to a dog for this course. This can be your dog, the dog of a willing friend or a shelter dog. The assignments involve specific training tasks that you will report on in written assignments. You will also require access to at least a couple other people (friends, relatives, coworkers etc.) for the 'training game' assignment.

Dog Behavior Problems - 107
10 CEUs
This course provides a foundational knowledge of common dog behavior problems including (but not limited to) aggressive behaviors, separation distress related behaviors, barking behavior, digging behavior, attention seeking, coprophagia, house soiling behavior, and jumping up behavior. This course explores problem behaviors not by speculation about private mental experiences, but rather via a natural science behavior analytic approach. In other words, it looks at the behaviors themselves and the environmental conditions that set the occasion for them and maintain them.
Email: jamesoheare@rogers.com Website: www.CASInstitute.com
|
Functional Assessment - 108
10 CEUs
This course will present, step by step, a systematic and empirically supported method of evaluating problem behaviors in companion animals. Specifically, it explores the three methods of evaluation that constitute a functional assessment: interviewing the client, quantifying the behavior and carrying out a functional analysis. It will guide the student in developing an contingency statement for problem behaviors, accurately identifying the antecedents, behaviors and consequences that constitute the problem. The student will learn how to track the level and trend of the frequency, magnitude and/or duration of behaviors quantitatively in order to determine the state of the problem and the effects of the behavior change program.
Unlike the 'diagnosis-treatment' approach of (often haphazardly) attempting to classify a behavior, label it and "diagnose" it, the functional assessment is systematic (rather than a hodgepodge of intuitions and guesses), fairly simple to carry out and results in a statement of the individual animal's problem behaviors and the contingencies maintaining them (rather than a broad uninformative label) that leads logically to the procedures that should be used to change the behavior.
Forms are provided for the student to use and adapt to their practice.
Students will also explore the constructional approach to formulating comprehensive behavior change programs and the fundamental principles and strategies for designing these programs.

Working with Challenging Clients - 224
5 CEUs
As a professional you are not only training dogs, but are training their owners as well. In fact, what dog trainers really do is to train people to train dogs. There’s no way around it: no matter how superb your dog training skills, the success of your business is partly contingent on how well you work with people.
While many clients are cooperative and pleasant to work with, others are more of a challenge. There are types like Know-It-All Ned, Unmotivated Mo, Angry Agnes, and Rambling Rose, among others. This course examines specific types of challenging clients you will likely encounter, and techniques that can be used to work effectively with them and keep your training on track. You will find that the information in this course makes working with challenging clients you encounter much easier, even outside of your dog training career. Students should emerge from this course with able to analyze and discuss these topic areas.

Differential Reinforcement Workshop - 206
5 CEUs
In this course students will apply the principles of behavior, and the techniques of dog training learned in previous courses to address a complex training task involving differential reinforcement. The training task will involve training an animal to target with a nose or paw touch a specific object on cue in the presence of two objects and then extinguish the targeting, while differentially reinforcing targeting of the other object, transferring stimulus control to a verbal cue, followed by generalizing the performance to different settings (including away from home) to meet specific response criteria. The assignment will involve reporting on the training process to demonstrate insights and proper application of principles and techniques.
Email: jamesoheare@rogers.com Website: www.CASInstitute.com
|
Shaping Workshop - 209
5 CEUs
In this course students will apply the principles of behavior, and the techniques of animal training learned in previous courses to address a complex training task involving shaping, also known as differential reinforcement of successive approximations to a target behavior. In this case, we will be focussing on free shaping. In free shaping, the approximations are captured rather than prompted. Free shaping is an advanced skill that if done well can promote quick learning and acquisition of new behaviors, even ones not in the learner's repertoire already. It can also promote empowerment and creativity or learned industriousness.

Behavior chaining can be a useful skill in training complex series' of behaviors.

9 CEUs
A high quality on-line course in canine nutrition that is current in its content, enlightening in data presented, enjoyable, and applicable for every dog you own, treat, or work with. Results in a Certificate in Canine Nutrition.

Formulations, dietary options, processing, and nutrigenomics will also be presented. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to read labels and then try their new skills either on-line or at a store. Selecting whole food supplements is introduced and the course closes with tools to determine a dog’s nutritional status using fur analysis and a body systems questionnaire.

The Ties that Bind/ Pia Silvani
3 CEUs
As training professionals we know that a well-trained and behaviorally healthy dog is more likely to stay in the home and enjoy a deeper bond with the family. So how do you best meet your clients’ goals of having a great family companion in the classroom and through private training? Being prepared and effective with your protocols and teaching is the key to student achievement and satisfaction, but how do you keep your students interested, motivated and coming back?
As you attempt to align your curriculum, assessment, and instruction, you must begin by looking at the big picture and finding the over-riding ideas set forth by your community’s standards. What are they looking for and what do they need? By thinking about the end result and imagining various levels of proficiency and connection between dog and owner, you begin to define yourself and what you teach.
This workshop will focus on the development of lesson plans for the classroom and private training. How much is too much? Are you teaching them what they want/need to learn or what you think they should know? Have you thought about the subtle messages behind your techniques or how your attitude influences the student’s relationship with her dog? Are you providing the family and the dog with skills that work toward building an unbreakable bond? And most importantly, is it possible to inoculate dogs against homelessness or poor quality lives through creative, proactive, responsive curriculum? We think so!
