Join IAABC
Thank you for your interest in IAABC. In order to assure timely turn-around and to give our committee volunteers a break, we are not accepting applications for Certified or Associate membership for the remainder of the year. We will start accepting new applications for Certified and Associate levels February 15th, 2012. We are still accepting Supporting Membership applications.
All members have access to educational and networking opportunities via our general and species-specific discussion groups and level-specific logo. Certified and Associate members are listed in our Consultant Locator and are eligible to vote.

Certified Membership
Certified Applicants pay an application fee of $125 and have ninety (90) days to provide:
- Three (3) e-mailed letters of reference, one each from a client, colleague and veterinarian
- Three (3) written case studies (see the example) that discuss in-person client/pet cases of multiple visits and are followed through to completion
- Written discussion of three (3) case scenarios
- Submitted case studies and scenario responses must convey the applicant's ability to communicate clearly through written work, and demonstrate knowledge (80% or greater) of all 6 Core Areas of Competency.
- Completion of questions regarding terminology, techniques, assessment and history taking as well as consulting hours.
Case studies are graded according to the Case Study Scoring Rubric and must score 80% or greater. Case studies should be thorough, reflect your knowledge and abilities as a behavior consultant, and demonstrate your skills in working a complex behavioral issue through with a client family or individual and their pet, from beginning to end.
Behavior cases with sheltered and/or your own personal or foster animals do not qualify as case studies if there is no ongoing interaction with human clients/owners involved. We realize that the field of behavior consulting with some species may not yet have grown to a point where in-person consulting hours are as readily available as with canine behavior consulting. For this reason, we invite consultants in these species to submit evidence of phone consultations through shelters and private consulting, and other relevant experience and study in lieu of a portion of required in-person consulting hours pending all other requirements are met.
Requirements for certification are:
- A minimum of 3 years and 1000 hours in animal behavior consulting
- 400 hours minimum of coursework, seminars and mentorship related to the core areas of competency and species of expertise
- Minimum high school diploma
- Applicants may be asked to show proof of consulting hours and seminar attendance, instruction and mentorships upon request
Veterinary Behaviorists and ACAABs and CAABs are granted membership with the submission of three (3) applicable case studies and application fee.
After ninety (90) days, the application will expire and a new one can be started after another application fee has been submitted. Application fees are non-refundable.
Certified members pay yearly dues of $85 USD and are required to log a minimum of 36 continuing education units every three (3) years to maintain certification.
Associate Membership
Associate Applicants pay an application fee of $75 and have ninety (90) days to provide:
- Three (3) e-mailed letters of reference, one each from a client, colleague and veterinarian
- Two (2) written case studies (see the example) that discuss in-person client/pet cases of multiple visits and are followed through to completion
- Submitted case studies must convey the applicant's ability to communicate clearly through written work, and demonstrate knowledge of at least 3 Core Areas of Competency, including species-specific knowledge and score 75% or greater on the rubric and Core Competencies
- Completion of questions regarding terminology, techniques, assessment and history taking as well as consulting hours
