The Art of Selling and Teaching Private Lessons
Animal Behavior College
Understanding how to expertly perform private dog training sessions is a crucial component of every professional dog trainer’s career. There are several reasons why learning how to offer quality private lessons is greatly beneficial to your training repertoire. Some clients are better served by one-on-one, individualized, personalized training rather than a group class atmosphere – perhaps the client’s schedule is especially hectic, her puppy is not of age to attend group classes, or her older dog’s shyness renders him uncomfortable when forced to interact with other dogs. Regardless of the particular client’s reason, there will always be a demand for private-lesson training. This comprehensive Continuing Education Program (CEP), titled “The Art of Selling and Teaching Private Lessons,” is comprised of approximately 300 pages of highly-detailed, invaluable, critical information that every trainer should familiarize herself with in regards to conducting private lessons. Authored by Teoti Anderson, former president of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), this CEP will ameliorate your knowledge of proper private-lesson training and will instruct you on such imperative topics as sales techniques and tips, understanding communication styles, the different types of private training, developing effective training plans, how to teach off-leash behaviors, and how to achieve client compliance in order to maximize the successfulness of your training. Additionally, the CEP covers advanced tips for marketing yourself and your business and includes essential information on liability protection, a necessity for every dog trainer. Upon completion of this course, you will have the proficiency and aptitude necessary in order to offer and administer effective private lessons within a client’s home, at a local park or at your own facility. Your knowledge of how to obtain clientele and conduct efficient private lessons will assist you in growing your business and maximizing its potential as you will have the ability to offer a plethora of training services to your clients aside from group classes.

Dog Training: Generalizing Behaviors
Steve White
True mastery of any skill requires that learners go through the four phases of acquisition, fluency, generalization, and retention. Each of these phases must be systematically addressed if we hope to develop robust behaviors that can be performed at will, anywhere, anytime, and under any circumstances for the life of the learner. Building on the material in the previous Fluency webinar, we'll show you how to turn fluent behaviors into robust, road-worthy ones by systematically addressing the four elements of generalization.

Relationship Between Physical and Emotional Health in Dogs
Melissa Bain
Disease is very often expressed behaviorally...lethargy vs. hyperexcitability, anorexia vs. polyphagia, "fly-snapping" and circling behavior. A disorder may possess both medical and behavioral components. Both must be addressed to ensure resolution of the problem. Trainers should be aware of the inter-relationship between the physical and emotional aspects of dog behavior, and understand the role that both trainers and veterinarians play in dogs' health and welfare.

Rich with Enrichment, Stress & Stress Reduction
Katenna Jones
'Stress' is a word we say and hear on a regular basis. It is often used when describing our professional, social, or personal lives. It is also commonly used when dealing with or talking about our animal clients. But do we really understand what it means? Is our stress the same as an animal's? What does stress have to do with working with an animal client? What should we consider when training? How do I know if an animal is really stressed, or simply excited? And how can I alleviate stress? Attendees of this webinar will learn about the impact of stress, both mentally and physically, how stress impacts training, and what they as professionals can do to reduce stress. The focus will be on studies conducted in animal shelters, and the benefits of working with shelter animals will be addressed as well.

Canine Freestyle I
In this course students learn how to train the foundation behaviors of excellent Canine Freestyle routines, how to select and integrate music, how to choreograph a routine and build it with back-chaining, and how to put it all together for a performance setting. Michele breaks down the process of creating a winning freestyle routine into easily-understood component steps—the same steps that she uses to create her own award-winning routines. The course is designed and taught by freestyle champion Michele Pouliot. Michele, with her dogs Cabo and Listo, are the winners of multiple national and international free style competitions, most recently the 2009 World Canine Freestyle Organization (WCFO) International Competition in Oklahoma, where three judges awarded perfect 10’s to Michele and Listo’s “Hotel California” routine. Michele also won the 2008 Nationals and both the 2007 and 2008 WCFO International Pro Stars. Michele was awarded the Attila Challenge trophies for highest Artistic and Technical scores each year. In November 2008, Michele and Listo made WCFO history by being the first team to receive perfect "10s" for both Artistic and Technical scores in the new Championship division of Perfect Dance Partners. Michele has been a professional guide dog mobility instructor for more than three decades. In 1974, Michele joined Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), the largest guide dog school in the US and attained her Guide Dog Mobility Instructor license qualification in 1977. In addition to personally training more than 350 guide dog teams over 20 years, Michele contributed to the GDB organization in many different ways through several positions of increasing responsibility. She became the director of training for a new GDB campus in Oregon in 1994, launching dog and student training programs and overseeing staffing for the campus. In 2001, Michele was appointed as director of research and development for student and dog programs within all of GDB. Her position focuses on developing new techniques to improve all areas of student instruction, dog training, and puppy development. In this position, Michele has lead Guide Dogs for the Blind through a gradual changeover from traditional training to clicker training throughout the organization. Michele has presented dozens of lectures and produced hundreds of hours of videotapes on every aspect of guide dog training. She discussed GDB’s clicker training program with a filled-to-capacity guide dog industry audience at the International Guide Dog Seminar in 2006, and the response to her presentation was tremendous. Michele and GDB actively support and assist other guide dog schools in their efforts to adopt clicker training; great strides are being made in the guide dog industry. Michele is recognized internationally for her innovation and creative development in guide dog training and service to blind clients.

Dog Trainer Program
Various
The course, which takes approximately six months to complete, combines a feature-rich online classroom and four two-day workshops, which students attend with their dog. During the online lessons students read and watch instructive video examples, listen to audio files, complete written assignments, online quizzes/assessments, and complete training exercises involving dogs and other animals. In the workshops, students demonstrate what they have accomplished in their training exercises and home study, and build on the skills and concepts under the direction of our Academy faculThe Dog Trainer Program teaches students to be skilled trainers and excellent teachers using force-free methods. The curriculum teaches students how to develop new behaviors with operant conditioning techniques (e.g. capturing, shaping, and targeting;) how to train “cleanly,” with excellent mechanical skills and clear and consistent cues; how to develop all aspects of fluency of behaviors and get behaviors under stimulus control; how to develop behavior chains; how to use cues as reinforcers; how to train complex behaviors and cues (e.g. compound cues, modifier cues;) how to create training plans and how to apply a functional analysis approach to solve problems. In addition, the teaching elements of the course focus on teaching ways of using operant skills such as positive reinforcement, shaping, and the clicker to teach the humans, as well as the animals. And the curriculum weaves best business practices together with best training practices, to help trainers who wish to develop and/or grow a dog training business. This is really just a nutshell version; the curriculum covers all of this and more! ty. At the fourth and final workshop students complete practical assessments on both their teaching and training skills.

Impulsive rehoming phase...postpartum and dogs
Jennifer Shryock
Overwhelmed new parents each year make a heart wrenching decision they often regret. Usually this peaks when baby is 2 - 6 months of age. This is Impulsive Rehoming Phase (IRP) or the “Better Off” Phase. Mom may feel the dog would be Better Off with another family as she is too tired or unable to meet the needs. Other family members may feel mom would be Better Off; with one less thing to take care of. These are the situations heard time and time again by shelters, rescues and dog professionals. There are many factors at play here and our goal is to offer ongoing support and solutions to help professionals and families work through this challenging time. This webinar will discuss what to consider and simple solutions to support the families you support during this time in their life.

Using TAGteach to Increase Skill Acquisition and Motivation for your Human Clients
Theresa McKeon
There are two clients that benefit from working with a professional dog trainer; the dog and the human who owns it. You work hard to create a positive and productive learning environment for the animal, but how do you do the same for your human client? There is a technology that combines best practices of the animal world (operant conditioning and marker based training), with specific modifications for the human learner. It’s called TAGteach. Using TAGteach increases opportunities for learner success, encourages focus, and creates clear communication between student and teacher. Dr. Julie Vargas (nee Skinner) commented on TAGteach. “It’s amazing that it took until the turn of the 21st century for someone to use a specialized conditioned reinforcer for human physical skills”. TAGteach is currently being used by all ages in a myriad of applications including: instructing medical students, PGA golfers, business management, special needs students, and of course, teaching animal trainers to train animals.

From shelter to new home: introduction of cats in transition
Pam Johnson-Bennett, CCBC
When a cat comes from the shelter it's not uncommon for the family to expect kitty to immediately recognize his good fortune and fit right into the family. Sadly, many shelter cats have emotional issues due to the initial reason for the relinquishment or abandonment. These issues must be addressed in the new home. This presentation will help the animal professional to guide owners through the process of bringing a shelter cat into the home, setting up a sanctuary room, bonding issues, and introduction to family and other pets.

CONDITIONING THE PERFORMANCE DOG
Racine Hyatt
Course Information: This course focus is multi-faceted. We begin with structural evaluation of your dog as it relates to performance – in other words, we are evaluating for purpose, not for fancy. This will identify areas of weakness and create your “Problem List”. Next we identify the five important physical attributes for the performance dog; using the information from your problem list, we will work through the steps to develop a Conditioning program which will enhance the aspects your dog may be lacking and preserve the ones it already has. This will create balance by strengthening adjacent musculature in addition to the primary muscles used for your particular event. We will not only take your dog’s physical fitness to a new level, the Conditioning program will create variety {which is the key to maintaining mental sharpness for any working dog} and result in tapering {a technique which will keep the dog’s performance at its peak by avoiding undue stress and preventing staleness}.

INTRODUCTION TO ANIMAL HOSPICE CARE
Ella Bittel, DVM
Purpose: The SPIRITS in Transition™ online classes are designed to give tools to people who are interested in providing end-of-life care for their animal friends. Course Information: This poses an exceptional opportunity for everyone whose animals are members of the family. It is tempting to not think about the time when our animal gets closer to the end of its life. However, not preparing ourselves ahead of time frequently means we have no other option but euthanasia. Providing hospice care is a great final gift we can give to the ones who have brought much joy to our lives. Often it is also experienced as lessening the grief, leading to a sense of great completion. The SPIRITS in Transition™ online classes are designed to give tools to people who are interested in providing end-of-life care for their animal friends. The best time to prepare for this is truly well in advance. In the unique program SPIRITS in Transition, we will explore a variety of ways that allow us to be the greatest possible support to our animal loved ones when they come closer to their departure. This puts euthanasia back in its rightful place, as an indeed last resort if comfort of the animal cannot be maintained. If it is skillfully supported however, an animal may well be able to pass peacefully on its own.

Too Dog-Tired to Behave: Executive Control in Canines is Sensitive to Fatigue
Holly Miller, PhD & Monique A. R. Udell, PhD
Research with humans and dogs suggests that executive control relies on a limited resource and that invoking executive control depletes this resource.Once depleted, subsequent efforts to control behavior are impaired and greater impulsivity, memory impairment, and aggression are observed. Research suggests that these deficits associated with depletion can be eliminated if subjects consume a glucose (but not a calorie-free) drink. In this seminar Dr. Holly Miller will discuss unconscious and reflexive behavior versus controlled and purposeful responding. Executive control research, including methodology will be discussed. Findings about canine executive control, including how diet can affect canine behavior will be reviewed. Discussion on this topic, including related biological, health, and training implications, will be moderated by Monique Udell.

Planning for the Possibility that Pets Outlive Their Human Companions
Amy Shever
Thousands of pets end up at animal shelters simply because they outlived their pet owners who had not planned for their continued care. Typically “orphaned” pets deteriorate in the shelter environment. This session will outline what options are available to ensure “lifetime care” for pets and how your organization can help pet owners in your community plan for the possibility that their pets might outlive them. The mission of 2nd Chance for Pets is to reduce the number of pets unnecessarily euthanized each year due to the death or incapacity of the human companions who care for them. 2nd Chance 4 Pets is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization. They work nationwide to provide pet owners with comprehensive information and lifetime care solutions, ensuring that their pets will receive lifetime care. My dog just wants to say "hi"
Robin Bennett
Any time two or more dogs and their owners come together, owners invariably want to let their dogs meet. More often than not we hear the familiar phrase “My dog just wants to say hi”, without that owner realizing the dog they are approaching may not be interested in saying “hi”. These are potential disaster periods in every group class and at rescue group meet & greets. The first 15-20 seconds of a greeting has a strong effect on the future relationship between dogs. Whether they are dogs attending a class together each week, neighbors having their dogs meet in the front yard or rescue groups trying to locate forever homes -- You only have one chance to make the best first impression! Trainers can help in these situations by understanding how to orchestrate a safe dog-to-dog introduction to ensure the best chance of success. In this seminar, Robin will teach the best questions to quickly determine if two dogs should be introduced. These non –invasive, non-threatening questions can be the key to making quick assessments. The seminar will also cover how to set up a greeting, how to recognize polite versus rude greeting behaviors and when to intervene and stop the greeting before it goes bad.

Introduction to puppy and juvenile learning and training
Noa Harell
Puppies learn constantly from their environment. They learn things we teach them, as well as a lot of learning on their own. The more we control their environment and supervise the puppy – the more control we have over their learning process, to channel it toward desirable directions. Learning is most easily done on a "clean slate" – this process is much easier than "unlearning" things through previous experience, although it is important to remember that the canine brain is prepared to learn different things at different ages. That said, as well as remembering that dogs are a neotenic species (that is, they retain some juvenile and adolescent behaviors into maturity), it is possible, and vital, to keep learning a game for both dog and human, in order for the dog to remain motivated to learn. When teaching dogs, several points are crucial to keep in mind, in order to prevent communication errors. One of them is the mistake of anthropomorphism ("humanizing" the dog's point of view). The webinar lists such common errors and the ways to avoid them. Socialization is a widespread yet often misused term. During this session, we clarify the term and explain the ways and ages to socialize puppies – including enrollment in puppy classes (goals, implementation, mistakes and problems to avoid).

Qualitative Analysis in Dog Training
Nicole Dorey, PhD & Monique Udell, PhD
With so many different training methods available to dog trainings, research in dog training is very important. This lecture will discuss some of the research that is being conducting by Dr. Nicole Dorey. The first study uses methodology created for humans to find the maintaining variables in problem behavior and adjusts this methodology for assessing problem behavior in dogs. The second study investigates different types of positive training methods. The hope is that this information will inspire dog trainers to think critically about the methods that they use and to investigate which is the best method for optimal learning. Discussion will follow led by Dr. Monique Udell.

Keeping Fear and Reactivity Classes Separate
Megan Armstrong
Reactivity in dogs is a common problem with many trainers now running 'growly' classes. A wide range of behavioral problems are addressed in these classes: leash reactivity, fear, aggression concerns, etc. After running growly classes for over four years, Megan recognized that it needed to be broken out, in order to be more effective. Trainers who are not running growly or fear classes, but are trying to address these concerns in regular classes, are likely creating additional issues for these dogs, and feeling a little frustrated themselves. This will outline the differences between the fear and growly classes and how each have evolved to meet their distinct objectives. You will also learn to identify what dogs should be referred to a growly class from a basic obedience class. Attendees will walk away with the questions to ask to place the dog in the appropriate class, class set up and management, and a variety of ways to treat each of these concerns. On top of this, attendees will learn how to keep the class fun and the students motivated!

Of Wolves and Dogs
Charles Berger, DVM
This 90 minute webinar is a recording of a live lecture followed by a question and answer session presented by Charles Berger, DVM, and hosted by Barbara Handelman, M.Ed, CDBC. Charles Berger, DVM, in this ethology lecture, will discuss the evolution of dogs, their relationship to wolves, and the association of dogs with humans from pre-historic times to the present. Participants will increase their knowledge of the origin of all canids, how they began their association with humans, and how humans have influenced the evolution of dogs in general, and dog breeds specifically, in recent times. Topics covered include the evolutionary path of humans and canines, both separately and together; natural selection; the evolutionary model based on DNA; domestication; human attitudes over time and across cultures; phenotypical diversity; and, morphological, physiological and behavioral changes resulting from selecting for tameness. There is a lecture followed by a short quiz to assess student knowledge of the topic.

Rethink 'pit bull' and break the cycle of discrimination
Donald Cleary
Attendees will learn the history of canine discrimination, how it led to the demonization of dogs called “pit bulls,” and how it has resulted in commercial discrimination, barriers to adoption, and breed specific legislation. We will also discuss the origin and limitations of modern dog bite studies, along with selected reports concerning the human-canine bond that have appeared in the academic literature. Regulating dogs by breed or appearance, whether in shelters or in our communities, destroys the human-canine bond. Trainers have the opportunity to teach their clients a better understanding of dogs, and, in doing so, to protect future generations of dogs from being targeted. Dog trainers can help break the cycle of discrimination by urging their clients to put aside stereotypes and hold all dog owners to the same high standards of accountability and care.

Pit Bulls and Other Terriers
Ken McCort, Monique Udell PhD Moderating
Ken McCort will present a seminar looking at the group of dogs commonly referred to as Terriers. Attendees will learn some of the history of the breed, their popularity in recent times and examine some of the available varieties of this canid. After defining some of the available phenotypes, we will then look at what makes terriers differ from other groups. This will include discussion about the motor patterns of the terrier and how it has suited man over the years. We will then look at the terrier pet and working dogs of today. Finally we will talk about the behavior of these dogs and discuss modification of maladaptive aspects of their behavior using different techniques I as well as other trainers have successfully used. Different management techniques, as well as the proper use of a “break stick”, will be discussed. Finally, a brief look at some pharmaceutical interventions will be presented, as well as discussion of recent legislation concerning these dogs. A question and answer session will follow, moderated by Dr. Monique Udell.

Dog trainers need to be prepared for emergencies involving their clients’ dogs, whether in a private in-home session, inside group class, outdoor adventure class or a board ‘n’ train situation. Are you concerned about your legal responsibility for the dogs in your care? Perhaps you are already trained in canine first aid but would like a concise checklist of essential safety tips specific to trainers? Do you want to provide the absolute best for your clients’ dogs? If something happens to a clients’ dog, the client will be looking at you for help. Are you ready? As a professional trainer herself, Michelle understands what trainers need to know to keep dogs safe. Using trainer scenarios, canine first aid research and personal experience, Michelle will describe, in detail, eight essential tips that you can implement immediately in your private sessions and group classes. Besides trainers, this webinar would also be helpful for other dog professionals including groomers, dog sitters, dog walkers, dog daycare operators and kennel & shelter staff. Increasing Appropriate Owner Use of Counterconditioning
Kristyn Echterling
Classical counterconditioning is used by dog trainers to reduce aggression in dogs. However, owners do not implement treatment as prescribed (i.e., treatment integrity). The program described addresses treatment integrity failures and provides techniques for increasing treatment integrity. Data suggest that the program increases owner treatment integrity, thereby reducing aggression in the long run. The program is designed to be used by dog trainers when working with clients.

Puppy Playtimes
Megan Armstrong
There has been a continual increase in complex dog behaviour concerns such as reactivity and fear. Majority, if not all, of these cases could have been prevented with proper owner education. In most cases, these problems developed because the dog owners did not attend puppy classes or actively socialize their dogs. Due to the trends in TV dog training, there have also been a concerning number of dogs trained by aversive techniques (e.g. dominance theories, choke chains), which are experiencing serious fall-out from these methods. A successful trainer should believe in education and understand that puppy classes are a critical. In this presentation, Megan will explain the reasons that led to them creating a free puppy class format. Learn how their free puppy classes are set up, promoted and structured and why there is such a large focus on playtime. These classes have been running for over a year now and have provided a large increase in all areas of the business. Stand out from all the other puppy classes in your area by providing a safe, effective and comprehensive program to ensure the successful development of your community's puppies!

The Intelligence of Swarms
Guy Theraulaz
Speaker is director of research at the French National Research Council Center for Animal Cognition, Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse. Ants, Bees or Termites - all social insects - show impressive collective problem-solving capabilities. Properties associated with their group behaviour like self-organisation, robustness and flexibility are seen as characteristics that artificial systems for optimisation, control or task execution should exhibit. In the last decade, diverse efforts have been made to take social insects as an example and develop algorithms inspired by their strictly self-organised behaviour. These approaches can be subsumed under the concept of "Swarm Intelligence".

A Look at Interactions Between Dogs in Public Dog Parks
Sue Sternberg
This presentation will be a video tour of public dog parks around the nation. In viewing these parks, we will be looking at not only the physical layouts, but also the most commonly seen dog-dog interactions. Learning from the use of extensive video footage showed in real-time and slow-motion, we will identify common engagement behaviors between unfamiliar dogs, and show a range of responses from healthy to downright dangerous (and everything in between). Some of the questions we'll be exploring are: 1. Is it the physical lay-out of a dog park that most influences the interactions between the dogs? 2. Is it the owners' behaviors that most influences the interactions between the dogs? 3. Is it the dogs' behaviors and temperaments that most influences the interactions between the dogs? 4. What makes a safe and healthy dog park?

Animal Emotions and Resource Guarding
Nancy Reyes
Animal emotions are often overlooked in working with resource guarding. It is an emotionally charged problem for both human and dog. The emphasis will be on resource guarding as it occurs in the human/dog context. We will discuss what characteristics in the animal are predictors of resource guarding and how they play a part in working this problem. Understanding when and why the dog feels the need to guard anything and how confidence and anxiety play a part in resource guarding will also be covered. Resource guarding exists when the presence of a resource triggers a different response to being approached than when there is no resource present. In working with resource guarding we look for what caused the shift in the animals feeling about the situation, the degree of the shift and how it gets resolved. The focus with be on how to restore the dog back to a sense of balance. Discussion and video will help trainers, resource workers and breeders in working with families with resource guarding dogs and offer prevention techniques. If we understand how things are affecting the dog, then we can make wise choices on changes that need to be made or how we can help.

Science-Based Dog Training (with Feeling)
Dr. Ian Dunbar
Friday: WE CONTINUE TO WASTE PUPPYHOOD!!! There are huge holes in basic puppy husbandry that lead to a drastic decrease in quality of life for far too many dogs and their owners and of course, for many dogs, loss of life itself. Puppy prevention of behavior problems and aggression towards people is as easy as it is enjoyable. Saturday: LEARNING THEORY REDUX — BINARY VERBAL FEEDBACK Binary verbal feedback is instructive and analogue. Verbal feedback is by far the best means for people to effectively correct unwanted behavior and to achieve absolute compliance without using aversive stimuli — without even raising our voice. Sunday: OFF-LEASH LURE/REWARD TRAINING Since luring allows us to predict precisely when the dog will perform the desired behavior, lure-reward training enables us: to begin to associate the verbal cue with the required behavior from the very first trial, to teach hand-signals within a dozen trials, to implement a differential reinforcement from the second trial, and to teach the verbal cues for several behaviors at the same time.

Click to calm
Emma Parsons
Click to Calm: Healing the Aggressive Dog. In this Webinar, we will discuss how to treat the dog that is reactive or aggressive with other dogs utilizing the principles of the "Click to Calm" methodology. We can shape emotional control with the clicker just as we can shape any other type of behavior. We will explore this process as well as discuss Clicker Home Management, Foundation Behaviors, and the Emergency Foundation Behaviors. Because the CTC methodology is the foundation on which TACT is built, this Webinar will lead beautifully into Julie Robitaille's Webinar on TACT: A Training Program for Dogs That Are Fearful or Reactive Towards People which will be featured in April.

Separation Anxiety Training Goes High Tech
Malena Demartini-Price
This presentation will give an overview to trainers as to how technology can help them increase the effectiveness of their separation anxiety treatment plans. There are numerous ways that the use of online programs can allow trainers to assist their clients in supporting more expedient absence protocols, and it is important that we use every tool we have to help these dogs and their owners! Not only can the technology change the effectiveness of the treatment plans, but it can also create a valuable and unique way for the trainer to participate in client training sessions. Beginning with a brief look at treatment to understand when to implement technology use and further exploring what types of applications are recommended, this webinar will allow the trainer to be armed and ready with technology for their separation anxiety cases in the future. There is no need to be tech savvy, nor do your clients need to have tons of special equipment. Come discover for yourself how you can utilize technology to help your separation anxiety clients and help your business be more efficient.

Animal Assisted Play Therapy: Theory, Research, & Practice
Rise VanFleet, PhD, CDBC & Tracie Faa-Thompson, MA, AASW
June 5-8, 2012, St. Johnsville, NY. Deep discounts expire November 15. This training is designed primarily for child and family therapists who wish to train and work with therapy animals to enhance their play therapy and other child/family work. The workshop provides an overview of the human-animal bond literature, animal-assisted therapy, research, and the integration of animal assisted therapy with play therapy. Emphasis is on dogs, with a special segment on horses. Canine professionals who meet the prerequisites are welcome to attend. AAPT involves the use of playful child-canine interactions to further therapy goals while regarding equally the dog's well-being. Many specific child-canine interventions are included, and the appropriate training, socialization, and preparation of dogs is covered. Learning to adapt each dog's unique personality to the therapy process is emphasized, and ways of partnering between mental health and canine professionals are discussed and encouraged. Problems that can be addressed using AAPT include child anxiety, behavior problems, attention deficits, divorce, trauma, attachment problems, animal cruelty, and social difficulties. One of the requirements of this approach is that the animals must enjoy the interactions, and ways of achieving that through play training and playful, relationship-building interactions are included. Training is for people only; dogs, horses, and other animals are provided for many hands-on practice sessions. See website for full details.

Two Timely Topics: Separation Anxiety & Dog-Dog Play
Nicole Wilde
Separation anxiety is a challenging problem for dogs, owners, and sometimes even for trainers. It may not be life-threatening, but it can certainly be lifestyle-threatening. In extreme cases, separation anxiety can even cost a dog his home. Get the best and latest cutting edge advice from the author of Don’t Leave Me! Step-by-Step Help for Your Dog’s Separation Anxiety, the award-winning book on the subject! Dog-dog play may seem a lighter topic, but it is crucial to understand the subtleties of play in order to prevent aggressive incidents and to keep dogs healthy both physically and psychologically. Both segments of this full-day seminar are packed full of invaluable information that will be applicable whether you are an owner, trainer, rescue/shelter worker, or other canine professional or enthusiast. Separation Anxiety: Both Sides Now (Morning) Many owners become frustrated and overwhelmed living with a dog with separation anxiety, and some even give up. While most trainers are aware of standard protocols and approaches, some dogs just haven’t read the game plans, and outside-the-box solutions are needed. Living with Sierra, a shelter dog who came with a deeply entrenched case of separation anxiety, has given Nicole an insider’s perspective on separation issues and has emphasized the fact that a cookie-cutter approach does not work for every dog. Nicole’s twenty years of experience as a canine behavior specialist, along with her newfound empathy for owners, allowed her to develop outside-the-box, creative ways to address separation problems and to support owners. This presentation includes lecture and video. Topics include: - How to accurately diagnose a separation issue, and how to differentiate separation anxiety from isolation distress - Root causes, and how owners can have an influence for better or worse - Creative management options, including what to do in an emergency - The Alone Zone: Where in (or outside) the house to leave your dog when you’re away; what is not recommended and why - The latest, easy-to-use technological advances that allow you to monitor your dog while you’re away - Assessing if and when pharmacological intervention is appropriate, and two natural alternatives to consider - Complementary products and therapies that may help - Separation anxiety myths (You might be surprised at some of the “accepted wisdom” that is simply untrue!) - Common questions, such as “Could getting a second dog help?” - A structure to help you formulate a customized behavior modification plan Whether you are a trainer, owner, or shelter/rescue worker, you will come away from this seminar with a better understanding of separation issues and how to modify them in order to lessen stress for both owners and dogs, and to give dogs a better chance at a forever home. Dissecting the Dynamics of Dog-Dog Play (Afternoon) In the fluid dance we call play, dogs leap, spin, chase, pounce, and wrestle together. Their interactions range from joyful romps based in camaraderie and fun, to cautious “discussions” born of over-arousal and tension, and sometimes even to skirmishes that can result in bodily harm. If we are to make accurate behavioral assessments and keep dogs safe psychologically and physically, we must understand play’s subtle dynamics. Through entertaining lecture and extensive video footage, we will explore the nuances of dog-dog play. Viewing slow motion playback will reveal split-second body language, signals, and maneuvers that would otherwise be missed, and will improve your skills when watching dogs interact in real time. Even if you are an experienced trainer or owner, you’ll be amazed at how much is revealed. One thing is certain: you’ll never look at dog-dog play in the same way again. Topics include: - What constitutes safe play - Whether actions like mounting are problematic or not - What the latest studies reveal about gender play preferences, role reversals, and self-handicapping - What canine physical features may confuse other dogs and hamper communication - Which danger signals should not be ignored - When a play bow means something other than, “Let’s play!” - How and why redirected aggression occurs - How play can sometimes be a displacement behavior - Which situations warrant intervention and how to do so safely - …and lots more! Nicole’s seminars are always upbeat, fun, and packed with immediately useful information. You’ll come away from this full-day presentation with new knowledge, plenty of great new tips and techniques, and the enthusiasm to implement them.

Get Connected with your Dog
Brenda Aloff
Brenda Aloff will present a clinic with emphasis on the dog's language as feedback for your training. The way the dog oreints his body, nose, recognizing a silhouette in order to monitor behavior of other dogs in the area. There will be many relationship based exercises as well as pertinent learning theory topics covered. THese exercises become a venue for trust and respect between dog and handler. They are designed to negotiate with the dog in his own language about instinctive behaviors. The teaching emphasis is on watching "intention behaviours" using them to predict what will happen next and as the dog's feedback in the training conversation. Learn how to manipulate air space and use the dog's body language as effective feedback. The dog's own language thereby enhances communication with people.
