Behavior Checklist (BCL)

The Behavior Checklist (BCL)

The Behavior Checklist (BCL) is a behavior scoring system used internationally by organizations that breed and/or train service and guide dogs. Developed by Dr. James Serpell from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, in collaboration with multiple guide dog organizations, the BCL provides a common language and coding system to describe behavior in various observations, from puppy testing through training. BCL data are instrumental in identifying dogs needing extra support, matching pups with handlers, tracking behavioral trends over time, and genetic selection using estimated breeding values.

The Behavior Checklist is a standardized test with specific definitions and criteria for scoring behavior. Please review this scoring criteria thoroughly before taking the test.
